The Fine Art Digital Black-and-White Print
Five-Day Workshop at the Maine Media Workshops & College, Camden, Maine
July 31 to August 6, 2016
(MMW is a magical place & this is my 9th summer teaching there!)
information & registration
Forget “convert to grayscale.” This five-day workshop provides time enough to cover almost everything you want to know about black-and-white. Hands-on. From how to make gallery-quality inkjet prints to the “best” black-and-white conversion techniques — we’ll cover it all. Step-by-step demonstrations and practice time in MMW’s state-of-the-art digital lab teach participants how to do great black-and-white “darkroom” work – digitally.
Of course, no MMW workshop would be complete without field-trips to work on shooting techniques and create new images. In addition to demos and individual attention in the lab, the class will explore and photograph the beauty of Mid-coast Maine.
Every student will complete the course with a new understanding of how to “think” in black-and-white. Participants will also learn which inkjet printer/paper combinations rival (or exceed) traditional darkroom prints and why understanding color-management and image-resolution is critical for consistent, repeatable, high-quality results. By the end of the week, everyone will have their own beautiful b&w prints to take home – as well as a virtual arsenal of Photoshop techniques to bring their B&W work to the next level.
Prerequisite: This course is not for beginners; participants should be entirely comfortable with Mac computers and have intermediate-level Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom skills.
