I’m so pleased to announce an exhibition of my photography at the Interchurch Center Gallery in New York City. Twenty-three of my photographs, “The Earth Rests on Water,” will be shown alongside approximately forty recent Hudson River oil paintings by Frances Wells, a dear family friend and truly wonderful artist.
The show is on view Tuesday, November 20 through Monday, January 7, 2019 – Monday thru Friday, 9-5 at the Interchurch Center Gallery is at 475 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10115. (Alternate entrance at 61 Claremont Ave; one block west of Broadway at 120th St.).
I’m eager to share this water-inspired work with you (quite a bit of which has never been seen before!) Curated by Frank Degregorie, the synergy between Frances’ paintings and my photographs is wonderful!
We sincerely hope to see you at the opening, among the friends, family, and patrons of the arts who will be gathered to enjoy the work, each other’s company, and wine & cheese! 🙂 Of course, Frances, Frank, and I would be grateful if you’d invite friends, and share this invitation.
The Earth Rests on Water
They say you can’t step in the same river twice and, like water, each of us is ever changing. We’re not the same person we were yesterday – physically, emotionally, or spiritually. These prints, made in many places, in color and black-and-white, depict water in myriad forms. They are not “nature” photographs, but rather photographs that reflect our nature. Each image transforms what was in front of the lens, rather than merely recording it, reflecting the artist’s belief that the world changes based on how we choose to see it. Miele’s work plays on the fluidity of perception. Liquid becomes solid becomes gas; the water of the sea becomes the water of the air, becomes the water of the earth, becomes the water of our bodies. In dreams, water symbolizes mystery, emotion, the unknown and uncontrollable. Like water, we too are all these things.
About the Artists
JEAN MIELE’S artwork explores the borderlands between fiction and reality, and reflects his lifelong interest in perception, spirituality and mysticism. His images, like utopian fiction or magical realism, are intended to remind us that each of us creates our own reality, and anything is possible. Miele’s photographs have appeared in thousands of publications, and his original prints exhibited and acquired by galleries and collectors worldwide.
FRANCES WELLS has lived on and painted the Hudson for the last twenty years. Her primary subject is the river: the water and its tides, the graceful land masses that sweep down to the shore hugged by forests, tidal marshes, rocky promontories, or sandy beaches. Like the Hudson River School painters, she is captivated by the beauty and the luminosity of the river and its valley. She loves the transitional times of day – when the moon rises, or the sun moves down toward the horizon and then below – when the glow of light on the land and water is the most subtle and fleeting. Her work, which has been shown widely, resides in over five hundred private collections throughout the US, Canada, and the British Isles. www.FrancesWells.com
