"We all feel, on certain days, the urge to look up, and see hawks in the sky, just for us. Everyone knows what it is to feel the invisible hand of the muse on our shoulder, and to hear, faintly (or perhaps clearly), the music of the spheres. We know that magic exists, but surrounded by the seemingly familiar, how can we see things anew? A plastic lens can be a catalyst, but the truth is we don't see with cameras, or even with our eyes. We see with our minds. Interpreting the world – making sense of the sensory data we receive – is a solitary, internal, and magical act. We assemble reality, piece by piece, minute by minute, inside ourselves. The lens that determines our experience is the lens of our awareness, and this we have the power to refocus and redirect as we wish." - Jean Miele.

These 22 photographs were featured as part of the 20th annual, world-famous international “Krappy Kamera®” Show in New York! Krappy Kamera is an annual competition for photographs made with toy cameras with plastic lenses, which culminates each year with a gallery exhibition at the Soho Photo Gallery featuring that year’s winning entries. I was honored to be the juror for the 2014 competition, and even more so to be invited to be the sole guest exhibitor in 2018.
