Whether by Krappy Kamera, Photoshop, contemporary or antiquarian process, Jean Miele loves photography’s magical ability to transform the world. His work explores the borderlands between fiction and reality, and reflects a lifelong interest in perception, spirituality and mysticism. “Gino” was the juror for the 2014 Krappy Kamera Show, and is honored to be the 2018 20th anniversary guest exhibitor.
Listening for the Light
“We all feel, on certain days, the urge to look up, and see hawks in the sky, just for us. Everyone knows what it is to feel the invisible hand of the muse on our shoulder, and to hear, faintly (or perhaps clearly), the music of the spheres. We know that magic exists, but surrounded by the seemingly familiar, how can we see things anew? A plastic lens can be a catalyst, but the truth is we don’t see with cameras, or even with our eyes. We see with our minds. Interpreting the world – making sense of the sensory data we receive – is a solitary, internal, and magical act. We assemble reality, piece by piece, minute by minute, inside ourselves. The lens that determines our experience is the lens of our awareness, and this we have the power to refocus and redirect as we wish.”
